🏆 1st Place Mostly Indica, 1990 High Times Cannabis Cup. Super Skunk won straight out of the gate on release and has stayed essential breeding stock for an entire generation of modern hybrids ever since.

🦨 Super Skunk Seeds: Skunk #1 Taken to Its Peak

Some strains improve on their predecessors incrementally. Super Skunk took one of the most influential genetics in cannabis history, Skunk #1, and pushed it to a level that won the Cannabis Cup on release and became essential breeding stock for a whole generation of modern hybrids.

Super Skunk feminised cannabis buds showing heavy trichome coverage and dense indica structure

When Sensi Seeds released Super Skunk in 1990, the foundation was already legendary. Skunk #1, developed in California in the 1970s by Sam the Skunkman and the original Sacred Seeds collective, was the first truly stable hybrid to combine sativa vigour with indica structure and potency, and its genetics spread worldwide to become the backbone of countless modern strains. Sensi saw room to push it further on resin, aroma, and potency, and they crossed Skunk #1 with an elite Afghani hash plant chosen for its extraordinary resin glands and deep, earthy hashish character. As one of the standout indica-dominant options in the catalogue, the Super Skunk strain is what that cross produced.

The result exceeded expectations: flowers so coated in trichomes they looked frosted, and an aroma so pungent and unmistakable that "skunky" became the universal descriptor for strong cannabis smell. It picked up the Mostly Indica Cannabis Cup straight away, established Sensi's reputation for breeding, and proved hybrid vigour could be pushed further than anyone had managed before.

What the genetics contributed:

  • Skunk #1: the revolutionary 1970s California hybrid built from Colombian Gold, Acapulco Gold and Afghani, which became the first truly stable, high-yielding, potent variety and the foundation of modern breeding
  • Afghani Hash Plant: an elite landrace indica selected for extreme resin, compact structure, fast flowering, and the deep earthy hashish character that defines traditional Afghan genetics
  • The result: an 80/20 indica-dominant photoperiod that carries the vigour and yield of Skunk #1 with the resin and potency of elite Afghan genetics, a combination that has shaped breeding for over three decades

That Mexican side of the family tree is worth knowing about, because it is the part that no longer exists in the wild. Acapulco Gold was the landrace that gave Skunk #1 its yield and much of its aroma, and what happened to the original is one of the stranger stories in cannabis. Our piece on cannabis genetics from landrace to modern hybrid traces how plants like these became the catalogue we grow from today.

What you get today: heavy, frosted trichome coverage that makes Super Skunk a favourite for hash and concentrates, the pungent skunk aroma that gave the whole Skunk family its name (deepened here by Afghan hashish notes), and dense colas on a robust, mould-resistant plant. At ~18 to 22% THC it sits in our high-THC range, and it has stayed in continuous global cultivation for over 30 years because it simply works.

Growing Super Skunk in Australia: the warm, dry Australian climate suits Super Skunk seeds exceptionally well. The Afghan genetics bring natural resilience to heat and low humidity, the 8 to 9 week flower fits the outdoor season, and the mould resistance makes it one of the safer choices for humid coastal regions where bud rot is a concern. See where it sits in our full strain lineup.

🌿 Super Skunk Seeds Effects and Experience

Onset (5 to 10 minutes): immediate cerebral uplift. Mood brightens, mental energy rises, focus sharpens. The Skunk #1 sativa influence is apparent in the first 15 minutes, functional and sociable from the start.

Peak (20 to 60 minutes): body effects build gradually as the Afghan indica genetics express. Muscles relax and physical tension releases without heavy sedation or couch-lock. The balance is the defining trait here, mentally stimulated and alert while physically relaxed, suiting creative work, social settings, or active pursuits.

Duration: 2 to 3 hours of peak effects with a smooth, gradual taper rather than a sharp drop. Experienced users feel it fade around 2.5 hours, while newer users often hold a pleasant residual uplift past 3 hours.

Mental state: energised, creative, focused, sociable. It leans productive rather than sedative, unusual for an 80% indica, which makes it good for artistic work, problem-solving, conversation, music, or anything that benefits from sustained attention without physical tension.

Potency note: at ~18 to 22% THC this is genuinely potent, and the balanced effect can be deceptive, since you feel good and functional rather than overwhelmed. New users should start with one or two and wait, since the onset is fast but the full effect develops over 15 to 20 minutes.

Best suited to: creative projects, social settings, daytime use where staying functional matters, and an easy evening unwind. The balance makes it genuinely versatile across the day at different doses.

Flavour: pungent skunk dominates the inhale, sharp, funky, and immediately recognisable, with sweet notes following and earthy Afghan hashish depth underneath. A subtle citrus brightness on the exhale comes from the limonene. The smoke is surprisingly smooth for such a pungent aroma, exactly what the name promises.

🦨 Terpene Profile

The aroma is the classic skunk profile that defined an era, with Afghan genetics adding earthy hashish depth beneath the sharpness:

  • Caryophyllene (dominant): the spicy, peppery note that also turns up in black pepper and cloves
  • Myrcene: an earthy base that grounds the profile and supports the body side
  • Limonene: the citrus brightness on the exhale and part of the skunk sharpness
  • Pinene: a fresh pine note supporting the clear, alert head effect

For how these compounds shape flavour and effect, see our cannabis terpenes guide.

🌱 Growing Super Skunk Seeds in Australia

(Strictly for ACT residents with a licence or those overseas where cultivation is legal.)

Experience level: beginner-friendly. Super Skunk is one of the more forgiving photoperiods in the catalogue, since the Afghan genetics bring natural mould resistance, pest tolerance, and a real tolerance for grow-room mistakes. The main thing to plan for is the aroma (more on that below), not the cultivation itself. For the early weeks, our cannabis seedling care guide covers getting a plant established well.

Structure: medium to tall with strong indica architecture and excellent lateral branching. Indoor plants reach 100 to 150 cm with a moderate stretch in early flower, and outdoor plants in full sun can push to 180 cm. The structure is vigorous and productive, multiple heavy colas rather than a single dominant central one.

Training: responds exceptionally well to SCROG, SOG, and LST. The branching pattern and moderate height make it ideal for screen training, where it fills a net efficiently for even canopy distribution. Topping at the 4th to 5th node creates multiple main colas, and SOG works well with shorter veg for higher plant density. The genetics are vigorous and forgiving enough to handle training stress well. If you are working with limited headroom, our guide to growing cannabis in small spaces covers screen setups in compact tents.

Feeding: a moderate-to-heavy feeder in flower, since the Afghan genetics and high resin production reward consistent nutrition, particularly through weeks 4 to 7 when trichome development peaks. It handles moderate-to-high EC without tip burn, but back off nitrogen from week 6 to protect terpene expression. If the leaves start telling you something is off, our nutrient deficiency guide covers how to read them.

Aroma management: the pungent skunk smell is no joke. It develops strongly from week 4 to 5 of flower and intensifies through harvest, so indoor growers absolutely need quality carbon filtration and outdoor growers need to factor in discretion. This is not a low-odour strain, and that is part of what makes it Super Skunk.

Pests: the Afghan genetics give it better natural pest tolerance than most, but tolerance is not immunity, particularly outdoors where budworm is the main threat to a dense cola. Our organic pest control guide covers identification and treatment without reaching for anything harsh.

Harvest: watch trichomes from week 7 and harvest at 10 to 20% amber on the buds (not the sugar leaves) for the full resin development the Afghan genetics deliver. Our amber trichomes guide covers reading them, our guide to reading the whole plant at harvest covers the signals beyond trichome colour, and the drying and curing guides cover the finish.

Common issues: aroma intensity is the main one, since inadequate filtration creates obvious odour problems from week 5. Vigorous growth can outpace a small space if veg runs too long, so plan the flip timing. Otherwise Super Skunk is remarkably problem-free, with the Afghan genetics providing the mould resistance and adaptability that make it one of the easier strains to grow well.

🏠 Indoor Growing

  • Flowering: 8 to 9 weeks from the 12/12 flip, with most phenotypes finishing at week 9 for full resin development
  • Yield: up to 550 g/m² under quality LED or HPS (600W+), with SCROG hitting the upper range
  • Height: a moderate 40 to 50% stretch, so flip at 60 to 70 cm for final heights around 100 to 120 cm, and SCROG controls height while maximising yield
  • Veg: 4 to 6 weeks for good yield, shorter for SOG with higher density
  • Climate: 22 to 26 °C through flower, humidity 50 to 60% veg, 40 to 50% flower, below 40% in the final 2 weeks
  • Carbon filtration: non-negotiable, sized to your extraction fan, since the aroma is intense and persistent from week 5

🌿 Outdoor Growing (Australia)

  • Harvest: late March through mid-April across most of Australia, earlier in Queensland and into late April in cooler Tasmania and the Victorian highlands
  • Yield: 400 to 600 g/plant depending on veg time and conditions, with in-ground plants from October regularly producing 500 to 600 g
  • Plant size: 150 to 180 cm typical with good veg, vigorous and branchy with multiple heavy colas
  • Site: full sun, 8+ hours, warm and dry ideal. Super Skunk handles heat well (up to ~35 °C), and the mould resistance makes it one of the safer choices for humid coastal regions
  • Timing: plant late October or early November for maximum veg, flowering naturally as daylight drops below 14 hours. Jason's outdoor growing guide covers the season calendar and regional harvest deadlines, and our Australian climate strain guide breaks strain choice down by region
  • Support: stake main branches from week 5 to 6, since the resin-heavy colas get dense and can stress branches in wind and rain

🗓️ Super Skunk Seeds Week-by-Week Grow Timeline

Phase What's Happening Key Actions Watch Out For
Veg
Weeks 1–5
Vigorous growth and strong lateral branching. Forgiving Afghan genetics establishing a robust structure 18/6 light. Top at the 4th to 5th node. Set SCROG or begin LST. Build feed steadily Over-long veg in a small space, since the vigour fills the area fast. Plan the flip timing
Early flower
Flower weeks 1–3
A moderate 40 to 50% stretch. Bud sites establishing across the canopy. Aroma faint as yet Flip to 12/12. Transition to bloom nutrients. Train branches under the screen as they stretch. Drop RH to 50% Height in short tents. Tuck or supercrop branches reaching the light
Mid flower
Flower weeks 4–6
Dense colas stacking. Trichome development accelerating. The skunk aroma building strongly from week 4 to 5 Peak feeding for resin. Carbon filtration running. Back off nitrogen from week 6. Drop RH to 40 to 45% Aroma. Inadequate filtration shows here, so size the carbon filter properly
Late flower
Flower weeks 7–9
Buds hardening and frosting heavily. Trichomes transitioning to amber. Resin at its peak in the final week Check trichomes from week 7. Drop RH below 40%. Begin the flush at 10 to 15% amber. Harvest at 10 to 20% amber Harvesting too early. Week 9 is where the Afghan resin really delivers, so check trichomes, not the calendar
Dry & cure The skunk and hashish profile settles and smooths in the jar over a few weeks Slow dry at 15 to 18 °C, 55 to 60% RH for 10 to 14 days. Jar at 60 to 65% RH, burp daily for 2 weeks, then seal Rushing the dry, which keeps the smoke harsher than it should be

🧠 Jason's Tip: Growing Super Skunk

Everything above tells you how to grow it. What it does not tell you is how consistent this plant is, and that is the thing I would actually point at. Run a pack of Super Skunk and the plants come up remarkably uniform: same structure, same finish time, same aroma, with very little of the phenotype lottery you get from newer hybrid lines. That is thirty-five years of stable breeding showing itself, and it matters more than people realise. A uniform canopy is easier to train, easier to feed, and easier to harvest in one pass, which is exactly what you want if you are running a screen or a small tent where one outlier plant throws the whole layout off.

The cure is where this one separates itself. Fresh off the plant the skunk is sharp and almost aggressive, and a lot of growers judge it at that point and think it is one-dimensional. It is not. Give it four weeks in the jar and the sweetness and the Afghan hashish depth come forward underneath the funk, and by six weeks it is a genuinely layered smoke. If you have only ever tried Super Skunk rushed, you have not tried Super Skunk.

The Australian observation worth passing on: this plant handles a wet snap in late flower better than almost anything else at its density. I have seen it come through a week of Queensland rain at week 8 with dense colas and no rot, which is not something I would say about most 550 g/m² indicas. If you are on the east coast and you have lost a crop to botrytis before, that resilience is the reason to put this one in the ground.

🎯 Is Super Skunk Feminised Right for Your Grow?

✅ Super Skunk Feminised is the right choice if:

  • You want a forgiving, mould-resistant strain that tolerates grow-room mistakes well
  • Heavy resin for hash and concentrates is a priority, since the Afghan genetics deliver it
  • You want the classic, unmistakable skunk aroma in its purest form
  • Strong, reliable yields up to 550 g/m² indoor or 400 to 600 g/plant outdoor are the goal
  • You can run serious carbon filtration, since the aroma is intense from week 5
  • You want proven 30-year-old award-winning genetics rather than untested hype

❌ Consider the alternatives if:

  • Discretion is critical and you cannot run heavy filtration, since this is not a low-odour strain
  • You want a faster, fixed timeline without managing a light flip, where the Auto Super Skunk fits better
  • You want a heavy, sedating couch-lock indica, since Super Skunk leans functional and balanced
  • A sweet or dessert flavour is the brief rather than a pungent, classic skunk profile

🌟 Super Skunk Customer Experiences

Paraphrased from verified customer reviews and grower communications.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ "Super Skunk is no joke. It hits fast and clear, buzzy, talkative, and energised, and had me working on music for hours without losing focus. Not for the faint-hearted, but not overwhelming either, just genuinely potent and clean." Verified customer (paraphrased)

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ "One of the best-tasting strains I've tried. The skunk flavour is real, funky, sweet, and earthy, exactly what old-school cannabis is supposed to smell like. The smell alone tells you it's quality before you even smoke it." Verified customer (paraphrased)

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ "Grew this outdoors in Brisbane, harvested early April. Incredibly resilient, handled a week of heavy rain in late flower without any mould issues. Pulled 480 g off one plant in a 25 L pot. The smell during flowering was intense, but the carbon filter handled it indoors. Would definitely grow again." Outdoor grower, Brisbane

❓ Frequently Asked Questions: Super Skunk Seeds

How strong is the skunk aroma really?

Extremely strong, and that is not marketing. The pungent skunk smell develops noticeably from week 4 to 5 of flower and becomes intense by week 6 to 7. Indoor growers absolutely need quality carbon filtration sized to their space, and outdoor growers need to factor in discretion seriously. It is part of what makes Super Skunk legendary, but it is a genuine operational consideration that cannot be ignored.

What makes the Super Skunk strain special compared to regular Skunk #1?

Super Skunk took the already-legendary Skunk #1 and elevated it through the Afghani hash plant cross, lifting resin production to the extreme trichome coverage that suits hash and concentrates, deepening the aroma into a more pungent skunk character with Afghan hashish notes underneath, and raising potency alongside both. The result won the Cannabis Cup on release and became essential breeding stock. It is Skunk #1 optimised for maximum resin, smell, and strength.

What is in Skunk #1, and why does it matter here?

Skunk #1 was built from three landraces: Colombian Gold, Acapulco Gold and an Afghani indica, crossed and stabilised in 1970s California. It was one of the first true-breeding cannabis hybrids, and its genetics run through an enormous share of what is grown today. Super Skunk inherits that stability directly, which is a large part of why it comes up so uniform from seed. Our Acapulco Gold strain review covers what that Mexican parent contributed and why the wild original no longer exists.

Are Super Skunk seeds feminised?

Yes, 100% feminised photoperiod seeds. Every seed produces a female plant, which requires light-schedule management to trigger flowering (typically 12/12 indoors).

How long does Super Skunk take from seed to harvest?

8 to 9 weeks of flowering plus 4 to 6 weeks of veg, so roughly 12 to 15 weeks total depending on veg length. Indoor growers typically veg 4 to 6 weeks before flipping to 12/12. Outdoor growers plant in October and harvest late March to mid-April, around 5 to 6 months on the natural seasonal cycle.

What are the effects like, sedative or energising?

Surprisingly balanced for an 80% indica. The onset is energising and cerebral, a mood lift with mental clarity and creative focus from the Skunk #1 sativa side, and body relaxation builds gradually from the Afghan genetics without heavy sedation. You stay functional, alert, and sociable while physically relaxed, which suits creative work, social settings, and daytime use. Higher doses lean more relaxing but rarely produce couch-lock.

What yields can I expect from Super Skunk seeds?

Indoors, up to 550 g/m² under quality lighting (600W+ LED or HPS) with proper training, where SCROG setups hit the upper range. Outdoors, 400 to 600 g/plant depending on veg time and conditions, with in-ground plants from October regularly producing 500 to 600 g in good conditions.

Is Super Skunk good for making hash or concentrates?

Exceptionally good, and it is one of the reasons it won the Cannabis Cup. The Afghani genetics deliver extreme trichome coverage that suits bubble hash, dry sift, rosin, and other concentrates. Expect heavy scissor hash during trimming and strong returns when processing for concentrates.

Is Super Skunk good for outdoor growing in Australia?

An excellent choice. The Afghan genetics bring natural mould resistance, heat tolerance (up to ~35 °C), and environmental adaptability, so Queensland, NSW, and SA growers get strong results, and the resilience makes it one of the safer options for humid coastal regions where bud rot is usually a concern. Plant late October and harvest late March to mid-April, since the 8 to 9 week flower fits the Australian season well. Jason's outdoor growing guide sets out the regional harvest deadlines in full.

Can I clone Super Skunk?

Yes. Super Skunk clones reliably with standard techniques and holds its characteristics across generations, with a good strike rate. Many growers keep a Super Skunk mother for exactly this, proven genetics that produce consistently, which the photoperiod format makes practical in a way autoflowers do not.

How much training does it need?

Training is optional but highly beneficial. The branching structure and moderate height respond exceptionally well to SCROG, SOG, LST, and topping. SCROG in particular works brilliantly, since the plant fills a screen efficiently and yields rise meaningfully with even light distribution. Topping at the 4th to 5th node creates multiple main colas, and the genetics handle training stress well.

What are common mistakes when growing Super Skunk?

Three come up consistently. First, inadequate carbon filtration indoors, since the aroma is intense from week 5. Second, harvesting too early at week 8 before maximum trichome development, where week 9 is where the Afghan resin really peaks. Third, excessive veg time leading to height problems, so flip earlier than you think if space is limited. Otherwise Super Skunk is remarkably forgiving.

Do you ship Super Skunk seeds across Australia?

Yes, with fast domestic shipping and discreet packaging, and most orders arrive within a few business days. All seeds are batch-tested and stored in optimal conditions before dispatch.

Super Skunk feminised or auto, which should I choose?

Choose feminised (this page) for maximum yield (up to 600 g outdoor), full control over veg time and plant size, and the ability to clone and keep mother plants. Choose the Auto Super Skunk for a faster, fixed timeline, compact plants, and no light-schedule management.

this review is for seed germination only as I'm still in veg. im a prick so for me to say anything positive is a complement. apon recieval being the bastard i am, it took the two worst looking beans of the six and germinated as per suggested method (along with 2 bruce banners) both popped one thrived but the other just never eventuated anthing more than a 3mm tail so of the two i got 1 viable plant for the box. thats ok, you get that sometimes. well spring is apon us and in central aus you can pretty much flower safely up until november if raised inside at 24hrs light then planting outdoors. so yesterday i popped anothertwo supers and another two bruces this time all 4 sprouted with great vigour within 30 hours. in my experience that is not bad and a happy camper i am. i would recommended this company both for it's customer service and seed vigour. I'll be back for more old school genetics soon. best of luck to all of you. of the 5 stars, i would give 4 and a half stars, possibly 4.75 stars. see... i am a prick.

I grew Super Skunk recently and now I understand why it’s still considered a classic. The plant was very easy to grow and handled everything I threw at it without complaining. It grew strong, produced thick buds, and the yield was solid.

The smell during flowering was extremely strong — that classic skunky, sweet, musky aroma that fills the room quickly. After curing, the buds were dense, sticky, and very pungent.

The effect is definitely on the heavier side. It hits with a relaxing body high and melts stress away, but it can also bring on serious munchies. For me it’s more of an evening strain rather than something I’d use during the day.

Overall, Super Skunk feels like one of those reliable old-school strains: easy to grow, big yield, powerful smell, and a strong relaxing effect.

Looking good so far! I've had 100% hit rate with different seeds from Sacred Seeds. I'll give you a tip, some people over worry about the seed when planting them. This is what I do with the seeds, get your self a small seedling rock wool cube wet it until it's soaked under a tap, easy right! then pop the magical seed in, then give it a hit with your nutrients. Then give it plenty of light do not be tempted to water it for at least 3 to 4 days, then give it a few drops of your nutrients. I Bet they will be up in 4 to 7 days this way.

The Super Skunk has a slight smell already and the plant is structured well the leaves are lush and it looks sweet for a seedling.
