Sativa Cannabis Seeds Australia
We’ll be honest — sativas are Jess’s domain.
Her all-time favourite is Amnesia Haze. Has been for years. The kind of clear, electric head-space that makes a creative session feel like time travel — you look up and four hours have passed and you’ve actually made something. That’s what a great sativa does, and it’s what shaped this whole collection.
Jason’s more of an indica man. But even he makes one exception: Bruce Banner. Leans sativa just enough to bring out the giggles after a long day in the garden. If you’re a daytime consumer, a creative, someone who needs their mind switched on not off — or you just want to clean the house rather than mong out on the couch — you’re in exactly the right place. Old-school classics like Jack Herer and Durban Poison alongside newer hybrids like Blue Dream and Pineapple Express.
Sativas aren’t for everyone. If you find them a bit full-on or they trigger overthinking, a balanced hybrid is likely a better fit.
What Are Sativa Cannabis Seeds?
Sativas come from the equatorial belt: Colombia, Thailand, Jamaica, Africa. Places with long summers, intense sun, and no hurry. The plants reflect that. Tall and stretchy, with thin finger-like leaves and a flowering time that rewards patience. They're not the easiest grow, but they're the most satisfying.
What they produce is distinct. A cerebral, clear-headed high that sits behind the eyes rather than in the body. Heightened senses. That feeling of being genuinely present in whatever you're doing, whether that's making music, working through a problem, or just being good company.
Terpene-wise, expect the bright end of the spectrum. Limonene, pinene and terpinolene, which is where the citrus and fresh pine come from. The kind of aroma that tells you exactly what you're in for before you've even sparked up.
Why We Grow Sativas (And Why You Should Too)
Jess grows Amnesia Haze every season without fail. Not because it's easy, because it isn't, it wants height and time, but because nothing else comes close for what it delivers. That particular combination of cerebral clarity and warm euphoria is something you chase once and then just keep growing.
The thing about sativas is they reward a grower who pays attention. They respond to good light, good feeding, and a bit of training to manage that stretch. Give them what they need and they'll fill your space with long, resinous colas that smell like the best version of a summer morning.
A few things worth knowing before you start:
Height management matters. Sativas want to go vertical. If you're growing indoors, start LST (low stress training) early, bending and tying those branches out while they're still flexible. Topping works well too. Outdoors, let them run if you have the space, since some phenotypes will hit two metres and beyond. Moby Dick is the one that tests this hardest, so read up before you put it in the ground.
Flowering takes longer. Most sativa-dominants run 10–12 weeks in flower. Autoflowering versions cut that significantly if you're working with a shorter season. Worth considering if you're growing outdoors in southern Australia.
They love light. High intensity, long days. If you're running LEDs indoors, don't skimp on wattage. Sativas are light-hungry and they'll show you in the yield.
Feed them well but watch for sensitivity. Some sativa genetics are more nutrient-sensitive than indicas. Start at 75% of recommended feed strength and work up. Amnesia Haze in particular will show you quickly if something's off. If you're new to this, our grower's guide covers the fundamentals before your first seed goes in.
Our Favourite Sativas (And Why They Made The Cut)
We don't stock everything. We stock what we'd actually grow ourselves.
Amnesia Haze · Jess's desert island strain. A Haze-dominant classic with Thai, Cambodian and Afghani heritage. The high is electric and long-lasting, cerebral and sociable in equal measure. Flowering runs around 12 weeks but the wait is always worth it. This is the one that made Jess a sativa person for life.
Bruce Banner · The one that even Jason grudgingly admits is exceptional. Sativa-dominant, outrageously potent, with an initial head rush that's energising rather than overwhelming. Named after the guy who turns into the Hulk for a reason. Great for experienced growers who want something with genuine firepower.
Durban Poison · A pure South African sativa landrace. One of the few true 100% sativas you'll still find in reliable seed form. Fast-finishing for a sativa, incredibly resinous, and that clean, focused energy is unmatched. A grower's strain. Jason's Durban Poison strain review covers the landrace heritage and the THCV behind that clarity.
Blue Dream · The gateway sativa for a lot of people, and for good reason. Balanced, forgiving, and consistently excellent. Blueberry sweetness with a gentle cerebral lift. If someone in your life is sativa-curious, start them here, and the Blue Dream review and grow guide has the full picture.
Jack Herer · A true legend of the sativa world, named after the great cannabis activist himself. Spicy, piney, and persistently uplifting. This is the strain that experienced growers come back to year after year, reliable and deeply satisfying to grow. Our complete Jack Herer guide covers the lineage and the grow in detail.
Pineapple Express · Tropical, uplifting, and instantly recognisable. A Trainwreck x Hawaiian cross that delivers a long-lasting, energetic buzz with a sweet pineapple and cedar aroma that'll have your grow room smelling incredible. Great yields and relatively forgiving for a sativa-dominant, with a flavour profile that is genuinely hard to beat. One of those strains that makes you smile before you've even finished the cure.
Moby Dick · The biggest thing in the range, in every sense. A White Widow x Haze cross that puts on serious size and backs it with a clean, cerebral high rather than the muddle you sometimes get from a heavy yielder. Growers regularly report outdoor plants well past a kilo, and it does its best work in dry, hot conditions, so WA and SA suit it particularly well. It needs room and it needs staking, and if you have both it will out-produce anything else on this page. The Moby Dick strain review goes into where that size comes from and how to manage it. If you want the same genetics on a shorter timetable, see Auto Moby Dick.
Acapulco Gold · A piece of cannabis history. A Mexican sativa out of the hills behind Acapulco that built its reputation in the 1960s and has never really lost it. Golden-tinted buds shot through with rust-orange pistils, an aroma that runs sweet toffee over earth and citrus, and a bright, clear-headed lift that stays sociable rather than racy. It wants exactly what it evolved in: heat, sun, and a long dry finish, which makes it a serious option for northern growers with the season to give it. If you want to grow something with real lineage behind it rather than a modern cross, start here. Jason has written up what happened to the original Acapulco Gold, which is a stranger story than most people expect.
Sativa vs Indica: The Honest Version
You'll read a lot of oversimplified breakdowns. Here's what actually matters:
Sativas generally produce more cerebral, energising effects. Indicas generally produce more body-focused, relaxing effects. Hybrids sit somewhere in between, often combining the best of both.
But genetics are only part of the story. Terpene profile, cannabinoid ratios, your own biology, set and setting: all of it shapes the experience. The indica/sativa distinction is a useful starting point, not a guarantee.
What we can say is this: if you consistently find you want to be doing something when you use cannabis, creating, thinking, moving, connecting, then sativa-dominant genetics are where you should be looking. And if you want the heavy, body-melt, end-of-evening end of things, head over to our Indica Seeds page. No judgement. Jason lives there.
Growing Sativas in Australia
Australia is genuinely well-suited to sativa cultivation, particularly in Queensland, Northern NSW, and WA. The long summers and high UV give you exactly what these plants evolved in.
Timing is everything outdoors. Sativas want to finish in autumn, because too much heat during late flower affects terpene development. In most of eastern Australia, germinating in September or October and harvesting in April or May is the sweet spot.
Watch humidity in late flower. The long flowering period means sativas are sitting in late summer and autumn humidity right when buds are most susceptible to mould. Good airflow, defoliation in the canopy, and keeping an eye on overnight temperatures will protect your harvest.
Autoflowering sativas are worth considering if you're in Victoria or Tasmania where the season is shorter. They'll finish in 75–90 days from seed regardless of light cycle, giving you more flexibility.
Where you grow changes which sativa is the right call, so Jason has written the whole thing up state by state in our guide to the best sativa strains for Australian growers by region. If you're earlier in the process than that, the grower's guide walks through germination, seedling care, feeding and harvest with the Australian grower in mind.
