🌿 Northern Lights Seeds: The Indica That Built the Modern Cannabis Industry

Northern Lights is the strain modern indoor cannabis cultivation was built on.

northern lights feminised seeds australia mature plant dense indica buds resin coverage

The genetics emerged in the Pacific Northwest of the United States in the late 1970s, before Australian-born breeder Nevil Schoenmakers took the cuts to the Netherlands and stabilised them commercially through his Seed Bank of Holland operation. The #5 phenotype Schoenmakers selected became the definitive expression: compact, fast-flowering, heavily resinous, and consistent across generations in a way few strains of that era could match. NL #5 won the 1989 High Times Cannabis Cup and remains a defining indica forty years later.

When growers describe a new strain as "Northern Lights but more potent" or "Northern Lights with citrus notes," they're using NL as the reference point everyone understands. Most strains don't earn the right to be a measuring stick. For the full origin story, including how Schoenmakers' Cannabis Castle operation helped establish the global cannabis seed industry, read Jason's Northern Lights strain review.

What made Northern Lights the strain that changed indoor cultivation:

  • Fast flowering by 1980s standards: 7 to 9 weeks of flower compared with the 12 to 16 weeks typical of the long-flowering sativas that dominated outdoor cannabis at the time. This single change made indoor cultivation under artificial lighting commercially viable
  • Compact growth pattern: 60 to 100 cm finished indoor with minimal stretch from flip. Bred specifically for indoor spaces rather than open fields. The Christmas-tree structure with tight internodal spacing fit grow rooms, closets, and tents
  • Resinous Afghani-dominated genetics: Heavy trichome production from the pure Afghani indica parent, with the 10% Thai sativa influence preventing total couchlock and producing the gentle gradient effect profile that defines the strain
  • Stability through generations: Schoenmakers' selection work produced genetics that breed true across multiple seed generations. Predictable phenotype expression, consistent effects, reliable yield. That stability is the product, and forty years on it still matters

One thing worth understanding clearly: Northern Lights is one of the most forgiving photoperiod cultivars in our catalogue, and that matters. It tolerates overwatering better than most genetics, recovers from minor feeding mistakes without dropping yield, rarely hermaphrodites, and stays compact without aggressive training. For growers running their first or second photoperiod, that combination makes it a genuinely good choice, not because the genetics are weak, but because they're stable in a way modern hype-bred hybrids often aren't.

↻ Looking for a different format? Auto Northern Lights carries the same Afghani × Thai genetics on a fixed 65 to 75 day timeline. Compact 50 to 80 cm, no flip required, suits perpetual indoor cycles and balcony grows.

🌿 Northern Lights Effects & Experience

The Northern Lights strain delivers a gentle, gradient experience that builds over 90 to 120 minutes, distinct from the immediate hammer of modern high-THC indica hybrids.

Onset (10 to 20 minutes): Slower and gentler than high-THC hybrids. The first signal is mental rather than physical, a quiet calm settling in, stress and tension fading without dramatic euphoria or rush. The 10% Thai sativa contribution shows itself here. There's a brief lift before the indica weight arrives. Within twenty minutes the transition into physical relaxation begins.

Early phase (20 to 45 minutes): Physical relaxation spreads through the body. Muscle tension releases, physical discomfort decreases noticeably, and a comfortable heaviness settles into the limbs. The mental state stays peaceful and content but isn't particularly stimulating or focused. Conversation, light tasks, watching content all work fine. This is the window where NL is still functional, and most users find it the most useful for evening activities that don't require productivity.

Mid-phase (45 to 90 minutes): Body effects deepen substantially. Physical relaxation becomes the dominant sensation. Motivation to engage in active tasks drops noticeably. The couch becomes appealing. The body comfort is at its strongest in this window. Mental engagement decreases but stays pleasant rather than fogged.

Late phase (90 to 150+ minutes): Full sedation develops. Physical comfort is profound. You're not paralysed (movement is still available if needed), but the desire to remain still is genuine. Many users naturally drift toward sleep through this window. Appetite typically increases substantially. This is prime time for sleep preparation or deep rest.

Duration: 2 to 4 hours at typical doses, with effects tapering gradually rather than dropping off sharply. Sleep often follows naturally if consumed in the evening. No harsh next-day grogginess reported by most users.

Potency note: 19 to 24% THC is moderate-to-strong by current standards, sitting below the 28%+ peaks of modern hybrids but strong enough to deliver substantial effects without overwhelming newer consumers. The myrcene-dominant terpene profile amplifies delivery, so NL hits harder than the raw percentage suggests, particularly in the evening wind-down context where the cannabinoid-terpene synergy is doing real chemistry. New users should treat NL with respect even though the THC ceiling sits below the modern hybrid peak.

Flavour: Classic indica profile: earthy and sweet on the inhale with pine and subtle spice undertones, then the characteristic musky-hash exhale from the Afghani genetics. Not complex or fruity like modern dessert hybrids. Honest, recognisable, satisfying. Properly cured NL is among the smoothest smokes in the catalogue. The slow-burning trichome density and clean terpene profile produce a smoke quality that hides the potency.

Common uses (anecdotal): Evening wind-down, end-of-week relaxation, pre-sleep ritual, deep rest after physically demanding days. The predictable relaxation without mental fog or anxiety makes NL one of the most reliable evening strains in the catalogue. Not a daytime strain. The body weight that builds through the mid-phase makes productive work difficult at typical doses.

🧪 Terpene Profile

The aroma is classic indica: earthy and sweet with pine undertones and subtle spice. The terpene chemistry behind it (Jason covers cannabis terpenes in detail here):

  • Myrcene (dominant). Sweet, earthy foundation. Produces the characteristic NL aroma and amplifies THC delivery through enhanced blood-brain barrier permeability. The myrcene contribution is part of why NL hits harder than the THC percentage suggests, particularly in the deep-body-relaxation phase
  • Pinene. Fresh pine notes, mental clarity, counteracts some THC-related short-term memory impairment. Keeps NL's opening phase more functional than pure myrcene-dominant strains
  • Caryophyllene. Peppery spice on the back of the tongue. The only terpene that directly activates CB2 receptors, contributing anti-inflammatory and body-relaxing effects through a pathway separate from THC at CB1
  • Humulene. Woody, hoppy character (the same terpene prominent in many craft beers). Contributes appetite-modulating effects unusual in high-myrcene strains

🌱 Growing Northern Lights Seeds in Australia

(Strictly for ACT residents with a license or those overseas where cultivation is legal.)

Experience level: Suitable for all levels including first-time photoperiod growers (the Story section above covers why). The compact size suits tents from 60 × 60 cm upward, the fast flower window suits indoor perpetual cycles, and outdoor harvest lands before autumn rain across all Australian states.

Structure: Compact, bushy, Christmas-tree shape with tight internodal spacing. Expect minimal stretch from flip, typically 25 to 50% height increase, much lower than sativa-dominant hybrids. Indoor plants finish at 60 to 100 cm depending on training and pot size. Outdoor plants with extended veg reach 120 to 150 cm maximum. The naturally bushy structure with dense lateral branching means height management is rarely a real concern. Flip when ready and the plant won't run away.

Training: Topping is optional rather than essential. The natural bushy structure means single-cola untrained grows still produce respectable yields. For maximum output, top once at the fourth or fifth node to create two to four main colas, then run LST through veg to spread the canopy horizontally. NL recovers from topping in 4 to 6 days with no significant veg time extension. SOG (Sea of Green) is the most efficient configuration for this strain: many small plants per square metre with minimal veg time, leveraging the compact structure and fast flower. SCROG works but is less efficient than SOG for a strain this naturally compact.

Feeding: Moderate feeder. EC 1.0 to 1.4 in veg (starting at 0.6 to 0.8 for the first two weeks), 1.4 to 1.8 in flower, taper to 1.0 to 1.2 in the final two weeks. NL doesn't need aggressive nutrition to hit its yield potential. Overfeeding is more common than underfeeding with this strain. Watch for dark green leaves with downward claws indicating nitrogen excess. CalMag supplementation helpful in coco or RO water setups.

Climate: Temperature 22 to 26°C in veg, 20 to 24°C through flower, with night drops to 17 to 19°C in the final two weeks. Humidity 50 to 60% in veg, 45 to 50% early flower, 40 to 45% mid-to-late flower. NL is more mould-resistant than dense modern hybrids. The Afghani genetics evolved in dry mountain conditions and the bud structure handles moderate humidity better than tight high-resin colas. Still keep RH reasonable through late flower.

Common issues: Few. Overwatering and overfeeding are the most common first-grow mistakes with NL, and both are recoverable if caught early. The compact root system doesn't need frequent watering. Wait until the pot feels light before watering again. Spider mites and fungus gnats can establish in dense foliage during dry conditions. Monitor leaf undersides with a loupe from late veg onward. The first two weeks from germination set up everything that follows: Jason's cannabis seedling care guide covers the early mistakes that compound later, and every Sacred Seeds batch is backed by our germination guarantee with 95%+ batch-tested rates.

🏠 Indoor Growing

  • Flowering time: 7 to 9 weeks from 12/12 flip, typically 8 weeks. Among the fastest photoperiods in the catalogue
  • Indoor yield: Up to 550 g/m² under quality lighting (600W+ LED equivalent or HPS) with SOG or topping/LST. Untrained single-cola grows produce 300 to 400 g/m²
  • Height management: Minimal effort required. Can flip to 12/12 at 40 to 50 cm and finish around 60 to 80 cm. Workable in tents as small as 60 × 60 × 140 cm
  • Light: 18/6 in veg, 12/12 to initiate flower. PPFD targets: 400 to 500 µmol/m²/s in veg, 500 to 800 µmol/m²/s in flower. NL doesn't require premium high-PPFD lighting to perform. Works well under basic LED panels or older HPS setups
  • Container: 10 to 15 L pots for soil, 7 to 12 L for coco/hydro. The compact root system doesn't need oversized containers. Fabric pots improve air pruning
  • Cycles per year: 4 complete photoperiod cycles annually with 8-week flower and 5-week veg. SOG with 2 to 3 week veg can push to 5+ cycles
  • Harvest indicator: Trichomes on buds at 70 to 80% cloudy with 20 to 30% amber for balanced effects, 50%+ amber for heavier sedation. (Note that amber trichomes aren't strictly required, particularly in heat-stressed Australian conditions where amber may not appear.)

🌿 Outdoor Growing (Australia)

  • Australian harvest window: Late March in Queensland and Northern NSW, early April in NSW and Victoria, mid-April in southern states and Tasmania (the fast flower window helps Tasmania finish before the worst autumn weather)
  • Outdoor yield: 400 to 650 g/plant depending on veg time and container size. In-ground plants with 10 to 12 week veg produce upper range. 30 to 50 L containers with shorter veg produce 300 to 450 g
  • Plant structure: Compact, 120 to 150 cm at harvest with extended veg. Bushy lateral branching from naturally tight internodal spacing
  • Climate suitability: Excellent across all Australian states. The fast flowering window means NL finishes before the worst autumn weather even in southern climates. The Afghani genetics tolerate cool nights better than tropical sativas, useful in Tasmania and southern Victoria where many photoperiods struggle
  • Timing: Plant in late October to early November after frost risk passes. Natural flowering triggers when day length drops below 14 hours in mid-to-late February
  • Site selection: Full sun ideal but tolerates partial shade better than sativa-dominant strains. Good drainage essential. Wind tolerance is solid. Sturdy indica structure handles exposure better than tall stretchy genetics
  • Container vs in-ground: In-ground produces maximum size and yield (150 to 180 cm possible with full season veg). Large containers (50 to 80 L) are portable with similar yields. Medium containers (30 to 40 L) suit balcony grows at 100 to 120 cm finished
  • Weather management: The fast flower window is NL's outdoor superpower in Australia. Plants finishing in late March or early April avoid the heavy autumn rain that catches longer-flowering strains. Mould resistance from Afghani genetics adds an additional buffer in humid coastal conditions. For state-by-state strain selection, our 2026 guide to the best cannabis strains for Australian climate covers what works where

📅 Northern Lights Feminised: Week-by-Week Grow Log

Phase / Week What's Happening Key Actions Watch Out For
Veg weeks 1 to 3
Seedling / early veg
Taproot establishment, first true leaves, transition to bushy lateral growth. Indica structure visible by week 2 EC 0.4 to 0.8 to start, building to 1.0 by week 3. 18/6 light. Top at node 4 to 5 in week 3 if doing so Overwatering. The most common NL first-grow mistake. Let top 2 cm of soil dry between waterings
Veg weeks 4 to 5
Mid-late veg / SOG fill
Compact bushy structure develops. Multiple bud sites form on lateral branches. Internodal spacing tight EC 1.0 to 1.4. LST to open canopy if running fewer plants. Flip to 12/12 at 40 to 50 cm Overfeeding signs: dark green leaves with downward claw. Back off nitrogen if seen
Flower weeks 1 to 3
Stretch / early flower
25 to 50% height increase only (low compared to sativas). Pre-flowers form. First trichomes appear Transition to bloom nutrients. EC 1.4 to 1.6. Reduce nitrogen. Light defoliation of shading fan leaves Less stretch than expected from photoperiods. Final height is more predictable with NL than most strains
Flower weeks 4 to 6
Mid flower / bud development
Buds stack rapidly. Heavy trichome production. Earthy aroma builds significantly. Carbon filtration required Full bloom nutrients. EC 1.6 to 1.8 (don't push higher, NL doesn't need it). Potassium support from week 5 Spider mites in dense foliage during dry conditions. Inspect leaf undersides with a loupe weekly
Flower weeks 7 to 9
Late flower / ripening
Dense resinous colas. Pistils darkening from week 7. Buds approaching final form Check trichomes from day 49. Taper to EC 1.0 to 1.2. Drop RH to 40 to 45%. Night temps to 17 to 19°C Don't harvest early. The Afghani body effect develops in the final week. Wait for 20 to 30% amber on buds
Flush & harvest
Days 49 to 63
Final ripening. Fan leaves yellowing naturally. Buds at peak density Plain pH-adjusted water for 10 days. Harvest at 70 to 80% cloudy with 20 to 30% amber for balanced effects Sugar leaf trichomes mature 5 to 7 days earlier than bud trichomes. Check buds for accurate timing
Post-harvest
Dry & cure
Classic earthy-hash terpene profile develops in the jar. NL at two weeks is good. Six weeks is exceptional Dry 10 to 14 days at 15 to 18°C and 55 to 60% RH. Jar at 60 to 65% RH. Burp daily for two weeks. 4 weeks minimum cure. Jason's complete drying guide covers the detail Skip the cure and NL tastes harsh. The hash-like smoothness develops in glass, not in the dry rack

🧠 Jason's Tip: Growing Northern Lights

I've run Northern Lights through maybe a dozen grows now, indoor and outdoor, across different seasons. The reason it stays in the catalogue isn't the THC ceiling or the yield numbers, it's that I know exactly what I'm going to get every time. Pack to pack, plant to plant, the expression is consistent. Modern hybrids can throw three different phenotypes from a single five-seed pack. NL doesn't do that, which is why it's still on the shelf forty years after it first appeared.

The growers I see underperforming with NL all make the same mistake: they overfeed. The compact size and fast flower can fool you into thinking you need to push nutrients hard to get yield. You don't. NL gives 400 to 500 g/m² for most home growers on a moderate feed program (EC 1.4 to 1.6 in flower, peak). Push higher and you get nitrogen claw, leaf damage, and slower bud development rather than bigger flowers. Start moderate. The genetics do the work.

The cure matters more on NL than on most strains. The earthy-hash terpene profile that makes NL recognisable develops in glass over six weeks. Pulled at two weeks of cure, even properly grown NL tastes harsh and one-dimensional. Pulled at six, it's smooth, dense, satisfying smoke that reminds you why this strain has been around for forty years. Don't shortcut this step. The genetics earn their reputation in the jar, not just in the grow.

🎯 Is Northern Lights Feminised Right for Your Grow?

✅ Northern Lights feminised seeds are the right choice if:

  • It's your first or second photoperiod grow and you want forgiving genetics that tolerate mistakes
  • You're growing in a small space. Tents as compact as 60 × 60 × 140 cm work for NL
  • You're running SOG indoors with many small plants per square metre and want the fastest-flowering photoperiod in the catalogue
  • You're growing outdoors in Tasmania, southern Victoria, or any climate where the autumn harvest window is tight. NL's 7 to 9 week flower finishes earlier than most photoperiods
  • You want predictable indica effects (body relaxation, evening wind-down) without the racing edge of high-myrcene modern hybrids
  • You want consistent results across multiple harvests and a strain that performs reliably run after run

❌ Consider Auto Northern Lights if:

  • You want a fixed timeline without managing the 18/6 to 12/12 flip. The auto's 65 to 75 days seed to harvest is simpler
  • You're running perpetual indoor cycles where managing separate veg and flower spaces isn't practical
  • You want to run multiple outdoor cycles per Australian season. The auto's fixed timeline supports two runs
  • You're in a discreet balcony situation where the photoperiod's 60 to 100 cm finished height is still too tall
  • You want the lowest possible grow complexity. Autos remove the flip decision entirely
  • You don't need the photoperiod's higher THC ceiling (19 to 24% vs 17 to 20%) or yield potential

For the auto version with full grow detail, see the Auto Northern Lights product page. To browse the full range, head to all cannabis seeds Australia.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions: Northern Lights Seeds

What is Northern Lights?

Northern Lights is one of the most influential indica-dominant cannabis strains ever bred. An Afghani Indica × Thai Sativa cross that emerged from the Pacific Northwest of the US in the late 1970s and was stabilised commercially by Nevil Schoenmakers at The Seed Bank of Holland in the 1980s. The Northern Lights #5 phenotype became the definitive expression and won the 1989 High Times Cannabis Cup. The genetics are 90% indica / 10% sativa with THC of 19 to 24%. Forty years on, Northern Lights remains a defining indica and the measuring stick newer strains in the category get compared against.

Who actually bred Northern Lights?

The original genetics emerged from underground breeders in the Seattle area in the late 1970s and early 1980s. The strain was acquired and developed commercially by Nevil Schoenmakers at The Seed Bank of Holland (later acquired by Sensi Seeds) in the Netherlands. Schoenmakers worked through eleven distinct phenotypes (NL #1 through #11) and selected #5 as the definitive expression, the version that became famous worldwide.

Is Northern Lights a good first photoperiod strain?

Yes. It's the strain we point first-time photoperiod growers toward most often. The genetics are unusually stable: NL tolerates overwatering better than most strains, recovers from brief underfeeding without significant yield loss, handles temperature swings of 5 to 8°C, and rarely hermaphrodites under moderate stress. The compact size means it works in small tents, and the 7 to 9 week flower means you get feedback on your technique faster than with longer-flowering strains. None of that makes it foolproof, but the consequences of typical first-grow mistakes are less severe with NL than with most photoperiods.

How long does Northern Lights take to flower?

7 to 9 weeks from 12/12 flip, typically 8 weeks. This is among the fastest photoperiods in the catalogue. Most indica-dominant strains run 8 to 10 weeks, sativa-dominant 10 to 14. Outdoor in Australia, the natural flowering trigger occurs in mid-to-late February with harvest landing late March in Queensland through mid-April in Tasmania. For harvest timing detail, our guide to when to harvest cannabis in Australia covers what to look for beyond trichomes.

What yields can I realistically expect from Northern Lights?

Indoor: up to 550 g/m² under quality lighting with SOG or topping/LST training. Untrained single-plant grows produce 300 to 400 g/m². Solid for a compact fast-flowering strain. Outdoor in Australia: 400 to 650 g/plant depending on veg time and container size. In-ground plants with 10 to 12 week veg produce upper range. Container plants (30 to 50 L) with shorter veg produce 300 to 450 g.

What does Northern Lights smell and taste like?

Classic indica profile: earthy and sweet on the inhale with pine and subtle spice undertones, then the characteristic musky-hash exhale from the Afghani genetics. Not complex or fruity like modern dessert hybrids, just honest, recognisable, and satisfying. The terpene profile develops significantly during the cure (fresh material reads as one-dimensional), and six weeks in glass is where the hash-like smoothness develops properly. Jason's complete guide to drying cannabis covers the dry phase that sets up a proper cure.

How strong is Northern Lights compared to modern strains?

19 to 24% THC is moderate-to-strong by current standards. Below the 28%+ peaks of modern hybrids but genuinely potent. The myrcene-dominant terpene profile amplifies the cannabinoid effect significantly, so NL hits harder than the raw THC percentage suggests. The smoothness compensates for the lower ceiling. Many experienced users prefer NL's effect profile over higher-THC alternatives specifically because the terpene-cannabinoid synergy produces a more useful sedative effect rather than just a stronger one.

Can I grow Northern Lights outdoors in Australia?

Excellent across all Australian states. The fast 7 to 9 week flower window is NL's outdoor superpower. Plants finishing in late March or early April avoid the heavy autumn rain that catches longer-flowering strains. The Afghani genetics tolerate cool nights better than tropical sativas, making NL one of the better photoperiod choices for Tasmania and southern Victoria. Mould resistance from the Afghani parent adds an additional buffer in humid coastal conditions. For region-by-region strain recommendations, our 2026 guide to the best cannabis strains for Australian climate covers strain selection by state.

How does Northern Lights compare to the auto version?

Northern Lights feminised seeds carry the same Afghani × Thai genetics as Auto Northern Lights, but on a photoperiod timeline rather than the auto's fixed 65 to 75 day seed-to-harvest schedule. THC sits at 19 to 24% (vs 17 to 20% in the auto), indoor yield up to 550 g/m² (vs 300 to 400 g/m²), plant height 60 to 100 cm (vs 50 to 80 cm). For maximum Northern Lights expression the photoperiod is the definitive version. For perpetual indoor cycles, balcony grows, or multiple outdoor runs per season, the auto is the practical choice. Our buying guide to the best cannabis seeds in Australia covers format selection in detail.

How do I know when to harvest Northern Lights?

Check trichomes on the buds (not sugar leaves, which mature 5 to 7 days earlier). For balanced NL effects, harvest at 70 to 80% cloudy with 20 to 30% amber trichomes. For heavier sedation and stronger body effect, push to 40 to 50% amber. Pistil colour is a secondary indicator, not the primary one. Note that amber trichomes aren't strictly necessary for harvest. Many Australian growers harvest successfully with zero amber, particularly in heat-stressed grows where amber may never appear. The plant's other ripeness signals matter as much as trichome colour.

How important is the cure for Northern Lights?

More important than most growers expect. The classic earthy-hash terpene profile that makes NL recognisable develops in the jar over four to six weeks. Pulled at two weeks of cure, NL tastes harsh and one-dimensional. Pulled at six, the smoothness and hash character develop properly. The smoke quality is part of why this strain has lasted forty years, and it doesn't happen in the dry rack. The complete drying guide covers the foundation that makes a good cure possible. Don't shortcut either step with NL.

Is Northern Lights good for making hash or concentrates?

Excellent. The heavy trichome production from the Afghani genetics translates directly to high-quality hash, bubble, and dry sift yields. Concentrate returns are typically 15 to 20% by weight. The clean myrcene-dominant terpene profile produces smooth, flavourful hash without the harsh or chemical notes that can plague modern high-resin hybrids. Historically, NL has been one of the most commonly used breeding parents for hash-focused genetics specifically because the resin transfers reliably to offspring.

This is the second batch of NL seeds I've had from Sacred Seeds. I've had issues learning to get consistent results. This time I'm sticking strictly to Jason's grow guide. As an old hippy from 1970's Vancouver Island, I thought I had a reasonable handle on horticulture in various forms and for the most part, learning to be a gardener in Far North Queensland has been a mixed bag. Some things are exactly the same and some are different. I'm reminded that assumptions are the enemy of curiosity. It seems that I was making grow mistakes in my garden, either with tomatoes, basil or the hooch because I wasn't asking enough diverse questions about my challenges. Or the environment. On my last purchase of NL seeds I've decided to give up as much as I thought I knew as I'm sure Jason knows much more than me. I've started four seeds; all four germinated immediately and are slowly becoming seedlings. So far, I've avoided killing any off. Bonus! I'm giving my review four stars because I don't have an outcome to report so here's the summary so far: four seeds started, all sprouted and are now seedlings. Today was the first day of adding nutrients to the watering at 1/4 strength as per the grow guide. I'll ride that horse to the end and assess the differences between Jason's educated guide and my geezer gardener approach. Thank you to Sacred Seeds for constantly delivering the goods in all aspects. I love the articles, reviews and assorted info as much as the great service.

This is our 2nd purchase, 10 seeds, 10 were germinated in 48 hrs in paper towel. Unfortunately I killed 1 with my lights but the other 9 are powering day 15 since putting them into paper towel and they are all tracking well.
