🏆 Nine Cannabis Cup wins, with more on the way. Sensi Seeds named Jack Herer after the activist and author of "The Emperor Wears No Clothes," and three decades on it remains one of the most decorated and recognisable strains in the world.

🌿 Jack Herer Seeds: Nine Cannabis Cups and a Rare Terpene

Jack Herer seeds carry the Haze, Northern Lights #5, and Shiva Skunk genetics that Sensi Seeds combined in the mid-1990s to honour the activist Jack Herer: a 55% sativa hybrid with a clean, functional, uplifting effect, nine Cannabis Cup wins, and a terpinolene-dominant aroma that is genuinely rare in cannabis.

Jack Herer feminised cannabis plant showing tall sativa structure with multiple colas in late flower

Sensi Seeds built Jack Herer to capture Haze's cerebral elevation alongside the resin and stability of Northern Lights #5 and the vigour of Shiva Skunk (itself NL#5 × Skunk #1). The result, named after the author of "The Emperor Wears No Clothes," went on to win nine Cannabis Cups and become a fixture of the Amsterdam coffee shop scene. As one of the clearest-headed sativa-leaning options in the catalogue, it has stayed in demand for thirty years because it delivers a functional daytime lift that newer genetics rarely match. For the full story of the man, the genetics, and the phenotypes, see our Jack Herer strain review.

What Jack Herer seeds do well:

  • A rare terpinolene-dominant aroma: fresh pine, citrus, and herbal-spice, distinct from the myrcene and caryophyllene profiles that dominate most of the catalogue, and immediately recognisable
  • A clean, functional sativa effect: uplifting, creative, and clear-headed, with enough Northern Lights body to avoid the racy edge of a pure Haze
  • Cup-decorated pedigree: nine Cannabis Cup wins on genetics that have stayed relevant for three decades
  • Strong yields for a sativa: 500 to 600 g/m² indoors with training, and up to 600 g/plant outdoors
  • Australian outdoor fit: the 8 to 10 week flower suits the autumn window across WA, SA, NSW, and QLD

🌿 Jack Herer Seeds Effects and Experience

Onset (5–15 minutes): fast and clean. The terpinolene-dominant profile brings a clear mood lift without the foggy warmth of myrcene-dominant strains. This is not a creeper, within ten minutes there is a noticeable shift, brighter and more alert.

Early phase (15–45 minutes): the cerebral character establishes fully. Focus sharpens without becoming scattered, and the 55% sativa genetics produce motivated, directed energy rather than the expansive drift of a pure Haze. Growers consistently describe it as functional.

Mid-phase (45–90 minutes): the Northern Lights genetics begin contributing a gentle physical ease alongside the still-active clarity. This is the balance point Jack Herer is known for, clear-headed and motivated but not wired, with the body effect present without being sedating.

Duration: 2 to 4 hours at typical doses. The terpinolene profile keeps the effect clean through the window, with no mid-session fog and a gradual, even taper.

Best suited to: daytime and morning use, creative work, social settings, and active pursuits, anything that benefits from a clear, sustained lift rather than sedation. It is the most functional daytime option in the catalogue.

Potency note: at 18 to 24% THC (some phenotypes toward 26%) Jack Herer is solid without being at the extreme end of the catalogue, and it leans sativa in character regardless of the number. It is an energising strain, so start low, since the lift can become overstimulating at high doses, particularly on the stronger phenotypes.

Flavour: fresh pine and citrus lead, with a herbal-floral ocimene top note and a peppery caryophyllene spice on the exhale, over a subtle skunky depth. It is one of the most distinctive profiles in cannabis, but the terpenes are volatile, so a slow dry and a proper 4 to 6 week cure are what keep the pine-citrus freshness intact.

🍋 Terpene Profile

The defining feature of Jack Herer is its terpinolene dominance, uncommon in cannabis and the reason it smells and performs unlike most other strains:

  • Terpinolene (dominant, rare): the fresh-pine, citrus, slightly floral character that leads the aroma, found as a dominant terpene in very few strains
  • Ocimene: the clean, herbal top note, and one of the more volatile terpenes, so it fades fast under a rushed dry
  • Caryophyllene: the peppery spice on the exhale, and the one terpene that binds directly to CB2 receptors
  • Myrcene: an earthy base that keeps the profile from being one-dimensional

For how these compounds shape flavour and effect, see our cannabis terpenes guide.

🌱 Growing Jack Herer Seeds in Australia

(Strictly for ACT residents with a licence or those overseas where cultivation is legal.)

Jack Herer feminised cannabis cola close up showing trichomes and orange pistils on sativa structure

Experience level: intermediate, not a first-grow strain. Three things need managing: the tall sativa stretch in early flower, the phenotype variation (a Haze-dominant expression behaves differently from a Northern Lights-dominant one), and the nutrient sensitivity. Growers with two or three runs behind them handle it well, and first-timers are better served by Northern Lights or Blue Dream first. For the early weeks, our cannabis seedling care guide covers getting a plant established well.

Height, the main challenge: Jack Herer is the tallest strain in the catalogue at full expression. Expect a 60 to 80% height increase at the 12/12 flip, and up to 100% on the Haze-dominant phenotype. An indoor plant flipped at 60 to 70 cm finishes around 100 to 150 cm, and outdoor plants can reach 250 cm. Top twice in veg, run SCROG or commit to progressive LST, and flip at 60 to 70% screen coverage so the stretch fills the rest.

Phenotype, plan for it: by week 2 to 3 of veg you can usually read which way a plant is going. The Haze-dominant phenotype has longer internodes, lighter green colour, more open branching, stretches harder, and runs the full 10 weeks. The Northern Lights-dominant phenotype is denser, darker, more compact, and finishes around 63 to 65 days. Adjust training, feeding, and harvest timing to what you are actually looking at.

Feeding, the second challenge: Jack Herer is nutrient-sensitive, and the terpene profile is the first thing to suffer when feeding is pushed too hard. Start at 50% of label strength and build on plant response. Pull nitrogen down from flower week 4 to 5, since excess late-flower nitrogen produces more foliage and less resin and mutes the pine-citrus terpenes. Some leaf yellowing in late flower is normal, not a deficiency.

Harvest, earlier than you think: the terpinolene profile peaks while trichomes are cloudy and begins to degrade as amber develops. Check trichomes from day 55 and target 85 to 90% cloudy with just 5 to 10% amber for the clean, motivated clarity Jack Herer is known for. More than 15 to 20% amber shifts the effect toward sedation, which is not what this strain is about. Our amber trichomes guide covers reading them.

Dry slow, this matters here: terpinolene and ocimene are among the most volatile terpenes in cannabis, so a fast, hot dry strips the signature aroma. Dry at 15 to 18 °C and 55 to 60% RH for 10 to 14 days, then cure for 4 to 6 weeks. Our drying and curing guide covers the process.

🏠 Indoor Growing

  • Flowering: 8 to 10 weeks, with NL phenos finishing faster and Haze phenos needing the full window
  • Yield: 500 to 600 g/m² with SCROG or aggressive topping and quality lighting
  • Veg: 5 to 6 weeks for SCROG, 4 weeks minimum for topped plants
  • Height management: flip at 60 to 70 cm maximum, top twice, SCROG strongly recommended
  • Container: 15 to 20 L for the tall sativa structure
  • Climate: 22 to 26 °C, dropping night temperatures slightly in the final two weeks to lift terpene expression. Humidity 55 to 65% veg, 40 to 50% flower, 35 to 40% in the final fortnight
  • Airflow: strong air movement for the tall, branchy structure, with carbon filtration from flower week 5 as the terpinolene aroma builds

🌿 Outdoor Growing (Australia)

  • Harvest: late March in Queensland and northern NSW, early to mid-April in central NSW and the ACT, mid to late April in Victoria, SA, and WA
  • Yield: up to 600 g/plant in good conditions, more in ideal ones, from an October to November planting
  • Height: up to 250 cm with a full summer veg, so stake the main branches from week 5 to 6 of flower
  • Best regions: WA and SA's Mediterranean-type climates are close to ideal, warm and dry through the autumn finish. Inland NSW also suits it well. Our Australian climate strain guide breaks this down by region
  • Mould resistance: solid for a sativa thanks to the open structure, though QLD and northern NSW growers should monitor from week 6 as autumn humidity rises
  • Not suited: Tasmania and cold southern Victoria, where the Haze genetics do not finish well outdoors. Greenhouse only in those regions

🧪 Jack Herer Seeds EC and Feeding Guide: Soil and Coco

Jack Herer is nutrient-sensitive, more so than robust indica genetics, and the terpene profile suffers before tip burn even appears. Feed it lower than you would most strains: start at 50% of label strength and build on plant response. The single most important action is pulling nitrogen down from flower week 4 to 5, since the pine-citrus terpinolene and ocimene profile is directly at risk from late-flower nitrogen excess.

All EC values assume quality base nutrients. Australian tap water typically runs 0.2 to 0.5 EC, so factor that into your target and measure after mixing.

📊 EC and pH Target Table: Soil vs Coco

Phase Soil EC Coco EC Soil pH Coco pH Notes
Seedling
Weeks 1–2
0.4–0.6 0.5–0.7 6.2–6.5 5.8–6.0 Plain water in week 1. Jack Herer shows sensitivity early, so start low.
Early veg
Weeks 3–4
0.8–1.0 0.9–1.1 6.0–6.5 5.8–6.2 50% label strength to start. Watch tips at every watering. Any browning means back off immediately.
Late veg
Weeks 5–6
1.0–1.2 1.1–1.3 6.0–6.5 5.8–6.2 Build slowly on response. Fill SCROG to 60 to 70%, then flip. Lower EC than most indicas.
Early flower
Flower weeks 1–3
1.2–1.4 1.3–1.5 6.0–6.5 5.8–6.2 Transition to bloom, reduce nitrogen, raise P and K. Manage the stretch. Do not push EC.
Peak flower
Flower weeks 4–6
1.4–1.6 1.5–1.6 6.0–6.5 5.8–6.2 Hold at 1.4 to 1.6, no higher. Pull nitrogen down from week 4 to 5 to protect the terpenes. P and K emphasis.
Late flower
Flower weeks 7–9
1.0–1.4 1.2–1.4 6.0–6.5 5.8–6.2 Taper EC down. Check trichomes from day 55. Some leaf yellowing is expected and fine.
Flush
Final 7–14 days
0.0–0.4 0.0–0.5 6.2 5.8–6.0 Plain pH water. The terpinolene-dominant profile sharpens noticeably after a proper flush.

💡 Feeding Key Principles

  • Feed low, build on response: start at 50% strength and watch the tips, since Jack Herer shows stress faster than most strains and EC over 1.6 in flower is rarely necessary
  • Pull nitrogen from flower week 4 to 5: the most important strain-specific action, since late-flower nitrogen mutes the pine-citrus terpenes and produces foliage over resin
  • Harvest on the early side of amber: 85 to 90% cloudy with 5 to 10% amber holds the clean clarity, more amber shifts toward sedation
  • Dry slow and cure long: a 10 to 14 day dry at 15 to 18 °C, then 4 to 6 weeks in jars, since the volatile terpenes are exactly what a rushed dry destroys. Our drying and curing guide covers the process

🗓️ Jack Herer Seeds Week-by-Week Grow Timeline

Phase What's Happening Key Actions Watch Out For
Veg
Weeks 1–3
Sativa structure emerging, long internodes, lighter green. Phenotype starting to show by week 2 to 3 18/6. Nutrients at 50% strength. Begin LST at week 2. Top at node 4 to 5. Identify Haze vs NL pheno and plan training Overfeeding, since sensitivity shows early. Dark, clawing leaves mean back off straight away
Veg
Weeks 4–6
Vigorous growth and fast branching. SCROG filling quickly on Haze-dominant phenos Second top at week 4. Build EC slowly. Fill the screen to 60 to 70%, then flip, do not wait for it to fill completely Flipping too late. Haze phenos especially will push into the lights if flipped on a full screen
Early flower
Flower weeks 1–3
The big stretch, 60 to 80% height gain (to 100% on Haze phenos). Bud sites establishing Transition to bloom, reduce nitrogen. EC 1.2 to 1.4. Supercrop or tuck branches reaching the light. Raise lights Height and light burn. This is where unprepared grows run out of room, so fold and tie rather than cut
Mid flower
Flower weeks 4–6
Stretch done, bud sites stacking. The pine-citrus terpinolene aroma building distinctly from week 5 Peak EC 1.4 to 1.6, no higher. Pull nitrogen from week 4 to 5. Drop RH to 40 to 50%. Carbon filter running Nitrogen excess. A leafier canopy rather than budding up means EC or N ratio is too high, and the terpenes suffer first
Late flower
Flower weeks 7–10
Buds fattening, resin at peak, aroma at full intensity. Natural leaf yellowing begins Check trichomes from day 55. Target 85 to 90% cloudy, 5 to 10% amber. Begin the flush at that point. Drop RH to 35 to 40%, cool nights where possible Over-ambering. More than 15 to 20% amber shifts Jack Herer toward sedation, so harvest earlier than an indica
Dry & cure The pine-citrus profile develops in the jar. Fresh-dried Jack Herer loses its most distinctive aroma fast Slow dry at 15 to 18 °C, 55 to 60% RH for 10 to 14 days. Jar at 60 to 65% RH, burp daily for 2 weeks. 4 weeks minimum, 6 better A fast, hot dry. It is the single most common way to lose the signature Jack Herer aroma

🧠 Jason's Tip: Growing Jack Herer

The thing that catches most growers is the phenotype variation. I have run this strain many times, and the difference between a Haze-dominant and an NL-dominant expression is significant enough that they feel like different plants to manage. The Haze pheno stretches hard, wants lower EC in flower, and takes the full 10 weeks. The NL pheno is compact, finishes around 65 days, and handles feeding more robustly. By week 2 to 3 of veg you can usually tell which way it is going, so adjust your training and feeding to the plant in front of you, not to what the seed bank says to expect.

On harvest timing, this is the opposite of most strains. I target 85 to 90% cloudy with only 5 to 10% amber. The terpinolene profile peaks and then degrades as amber develops, so more than 15 to 20% amber on Jack Herer starts producing a heavier, sedating effect that is not what this strain is about. Harvest earlier in the amber window than you would with an indica.

And the dry decides everything here. The ocimene and terpinolene that make Jack Herer smell the way it does are among the most volatile terpenes in cannabis, and they evaporate fast under a hot dry. Slow dry at 15 to 18 °C, and do not rush it. A fast dry on Jack Herer is where the signature pine-citrus profile disappears and you are left with something that just tastes like generic cannabis, after a nine-week grow.

🎯 Is Jack Herer Feminised Right for Your Grow?

✅ Jack Herer Feminised is the right choice if:

  • You want a clean, functional daytime sativa with three decades of proven performance
  • The rare terpinolene-dominant pine-citrus profile is what you are chasing, since it is unlike most other cannabis
  • You are growing outdoors in WA, SA, NSW, or QLD where the 8 to 10 week flower fits the season
  • You have intermediate experience and can manage a tall sativa stretch indoors
  • You want Cup-decorated genetics with nine wins behind them

❌ Consider the alternatives if:

  • This is your first grow, where the phenotype variation and nutrient sensitivity need experience to navigate
  • Your indoor ceiling is under 2 m without a SCROG setup, since the stretch will be a problem
  • You want a heavy, sedating indica effect, which is not what Jack Herer is
  • You want a compact, fixed-timeline grow, where the Auto Jack Herer fits better
  • You are growing outdoors in Tasmania or cold southern Victoria, where the Haze genetics do not finish

🌟 Jack Herer Customer Experiences

Paraphrased from verified customer reviews and grower communications.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ "Jack Herer is my morning strain. Nothing in the catalogue matches it for daytime function, clear-headed, energetic, and sociable without any raciness. The spicy-pine aroma after a 5-week cure is unlike anything I've grown. Ran it twice and it earns its reputation.", Indoor grower, Sydney

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ "Grew it outdoor in SA, October planting, April harvest. Plant hit 190 cm, had to stake everything from week 6. Got 550 g off one in-ground plant. The aroma from week 5 onwards was extraordinary, spicy and herbal, nothing else like it in the garden.", Outdoor grower, South Australia

⭐⭐⭐⭐ "Drew a Haze-leaning phenotype and nearly harvested at week 8. Let it go to week 10 on advice and the difference was significant, the spicy-herbal complexity that wasn't there at week 8 was fully present at week 10. Patience with the sativa phenos is the whole game.", Indoor grower, Brisbane

❓ Frequently Asked Questions: Jack Herer Seeds

What is the Jack Herer strain?

Jack Herer is a 55% sativa, 45% indica hybrid created by Sensi Seeds in the mid-1990s, named after the activist and author of "The Emperor Wears No Clothes." Built from a Haze hybrid crossed with Northern Lights #5 and Shiva Skunk, it has won nine Cannabis Cups and is known for a clean, functional, energising effect and a distinctive terpinolene-dominant pine-citrus aroma. For the full story of the man and the genetics, see our Jack Herer strain review.

How tall do Jack Herer seeds grow?

Tall, and this is the most important fact before growing it. Expect a 60 to 80% stretch at the flip, up to 100% on the Haze-dominant phenotype. Indoor plants finish around 100 to 150 cm with training, and outdoor plants can reach 250 cm. Top twice in veg, run SCROG or progressive LST, and flip at 60 to 70% screen coverage. Outdoor growers should stake from week 5 to 6 of flower.

What are the Jack Herer genetics?

Haze × Northern Lights #5 × Shiva Skunk (Shiva Skunk being NL#5 × Skunk #1). The most credible detailed account makes it roughly 50% Haze, 37.5% NL#5, and 12.5% Skunk #1. Sensi Seeds have never fully confirmed the exact lineage, but the three foundational genetics are consistent across all accounts: Haze for the cerebral lift, NL#5 for resin and stability, and Shiva Skunk for vigour.

How long do Jack Herer seeds take to flower?

8 to 10 weeks from the 12/12 flip, depending on phenotype. The Northern Lights-dominant phenotype can finish around 63 to 65 days, while the Haze-dominant phenotype runs the full 10 weeks. Check trichomes from day 55 and harvest at 85 to 90% cloudy with 5 to 10% amber for the clean clarity, since more amber shifts the effect toward sedation.

What makes Jack Herer's terpene profile distinctive?

It is terpinolene-dominant, which is genuinely uncommon, since most strains are led by myrcene or caryophyllene. Terpinolene produces a fresh pine, citrus, and slightly floral character, joined by ocimene's clean herbal note, caryophyllene's pepper, and a myrcene base. The profile is volatile, so it rewards a slow dry and a 4 to 6 week cure and degrades quickly under poor post-harvest handling.

Are Jack Herer seeds hard to grow?

Intermediate. The tall sativa stretch needs proactive training, the phenotype variation means adapting to the plant rather than a fixed script, and the nutrient sensitivity needs conservative feeding (start at 50% strength, EC under 1.6 in flower). Growers with two or three runs behind them handle it well. True beginners are better served by Northern Lights or Blue Dream first.

How does the Auto Jack Herer compare to the photoperiod?

The Auto Jack Herer runs the same genetic foundation on a fixed timeline with no light flip, in a compact, more uniform plant. The trade-offs are lower THC, reduced terpene intensity, and smaller yield. For the full terpinolene profile and the complete effect, the photoperiod on this page is the definitive version.

Do you ship Jack Herer seeds across Australia?

Yes, with fast domestic shipping and discreet packaging, and most orders arrive within a few business days. All seeds are batch-tested and stored in optimal conditions before dispatch.

Nervous first timer at ordering seeds. Will I get ripped off? Will they arrive. But everything was perfect. Easy to follow instructions for payment. Confirmation was prompt , which put me at ease and delivery was quick as promised. The seeds germinated but my cat decided that the newly dug soil was his new toilet. I have ordered more seeds and they also arrived asap. Wish me luck.
