Experience level: Intermediate to advanced. Moby Dick is not beginner-friendly. The tall sativa structure needs active height management, the 9 to 10 week flower demands patience, and the extreme early-flower stretch catches unprepared growers out. If you have a few successful runs and some training experience behind you, it is very manageable. Best environments: Indoors with a tall tent (200 cm+) or a dedicated room with vertical space, or outdoors in warm regions with a long season (Queensland, Northern NSW, WA). The sativa genetics need room to express, and cramped spaces mean a constant fight with height.
Structure and stretch: This is the thing to plan for. Moby Dick shows extreme sativa stretch, a 100 to 200% height increase in the first three weeks of flower. A plant flipped at 50 cm can finish at 150 to 200 cm, and a plant flipped at 80 cm can exceed 250 cm. Outdoor plants with a long veg can reach 250 to 350 cm. Height management is not optional.
Training: Essential indoors. Top two to three times during veg (first at the 4th to 5th node, then the resulting branches) to create multiple colas and rein in vertical growth. SCROG is the most effective approach: veg until the screen is only 50 to 60% full (the stretch will overfill it), flip, and weave the branches through during the stretch. 🧠 Jason's Tip: Growing Moby Dick
The stretch is extreme, and I cannot stress it enough. Nearly every grower I know who runs Moby Dick for the first time underestimates it and ends up with colas in the lights. Flip when the plant is half the final height you can fit, not more. If your tent is 200 cm and you need 40 cm for the light, flip at 60 to 80 cm, not 100.
Top it aggressively. I top Moby Dick three times in veg, which builds eight to sixteen main colas and drastically cuts the vertical growth. It adds a week to veg, and it is worth every day of it to avoid a height disaster. Feed it hard too: this is one of the hungriest strains I grow, and yellowing leaves in week five or six means you are starving it, not overfeeding.
And be patient at the end. I used to pull at nine weeks and wonder why the yield was merely good. Waiting until week ten, when the trichomes are properly cloudy, adds noticeable weight and depth. That last week is the difference between a decent Moby Dick and the monster it is capable of being.
