🍬 Auto Runtz Seeds: Zkittlez × Gelato on a Fixed Timeline

Auto Runtz seeds carry the Zkittlez × Gelato genetics that made Runtz one of the most sought-after cannabis strains of the 2020s: the candy-shop terpene profile, the euphoric onset that settles into body ease, the frosty dense bud structure, on a fixed 70 to 77 day seed-to-harvest timeline that flowers automatically without a light schedule change.

Runtz was built from two landmark West Coast US genetics: Zkittlez, which won 1st place at the 2016 Emerald Cup and became the reference point for candy-fruit terpene expression in cannabis, and Gelato (Thin Mint GSC × Sunset Sherbet, from Cookie Fam Genetics), which brought creamy dessert sweetness and potency. The combination produced the candy-shop aroma that gave Runtz its name and its reputation. For the full genetics story and the cultural background, see our Runtz strain review.

The auto version crosses stable Runtz photoperiod genetics with ruderalis to produce a fixed-timeline autoflower. The trade-off versus the photoperiod is a reduced yield ceiling and slightly lower THC, but the defining characteristic of Runtz, the limonene and linalool-driven candy-cream terpene profile, carries through the conversion well with a proper flush and cure.

What Auto Runtz seeds do well:

  • Candy-cream terpenes: the limonene-forward tropical fruit and the linalool-driven creamy vanilla of the Gelato side combine into the candy-shop aroma that defines Runtz, one of the most distinctive profiles in the auto catalogue with a proper cure
  • Balanced euphoric-to-relaxing effect: the 60/40 split produces an uplifting, social, talkative onset that builds into comfortable body ease, functional early, progressively relaxing later
  • Dense, resinous buds: the Zkittlez and Gelato structure produces compact, heavily coated buds with strong visual bag appeal
  • Fixed timeline and compact size: 70 to 77 days and 60 to 100 cm, multiple outdoor cycles per season and standard tent heights throughout

🌿 Auto Runtz Seeds Effects and Experience

Onset (10–20 minutes): uplifting and social. The sativa Gelato component drives the opening, mood lifts clearly, sociability increases, conversation flows easily, a light euphoric quality that is playful rather than overwhelming. The limonene contributes citrus brightness. Not racy or anxious at moderate doses, a comfortable, warm uplift.

Early phase (20–60 minutes): the most functional window, social, creative, and engaged. Good for conversation, light creative work, or relaxed activity, with physical ease starting to develop underneath as the Gelato indica genetics contribute warmth and comfort without yet pulling toward heaviness.

Mid-phase (60–120 minutes): the 60% indica genetics assert themselves and body relaxation deepens progressively. Mental engagement settles into comfortable contentment, appetite picks up, and the motivation for active tasks drops as the body effect becomes primary.

Late-phase (2+ hours): comfortable body ease with gentle mental calm. At typical doses this is relaxed and pleasant rather than fully heavy, while higher doses or a later harvest (25%+ amber) make it more sedating. A natural progression toward evening wind-down.

Duration: 2.5 to 3.5 hours at typical doses, consistent with the balanced 60/40 genetics.

Potency note: at ~20 to 24% THC with a caryophyllene and linalool profile that amplifies the body effect, Auto Runtz is genuinely potent, and the Gelato side punches above its THC number for body depth. Start at one to two draws and allow 20 minutes before assessing, the effect builds progressively.

Flavour: sweet candy-shop and tropical fruit on the inhale, the limonene-forward Zkittlez character leading, with creamy vanilla and dessert sweetness on the exhale from the Gelato linalool side, and caryophyllene adding subtle spice that grounds the sweetness. Smooth smoke with a sweet finish. With a proper 3 to 4 week cure the candy-cream complexity sharpens significantly, fresh-dried tastes decent, cured it tastes like the reputation.

🍭 Terpene Profile

Runtz is the strain that pushed cannabis toward candy-sweet profiles, and the terpenes are why:

  • Caryophyllene: a peppery, spicy backbone that grounds the sweetness, and the one terpene that binds to CB2 receptors
  • Limonene: the bright citrus and candy-fruit lift from the Zkittlez side
  • Linalool: the soft, creamy floral note from the Gelato side, the vanilla character
  • Myrcene: an earthy base that supports the body-leaning side of the effect

For how these compounds shape flavour and effect, see our cannabis terpenes guide.

🌱 Growing Auto Runtz Seeds in Australia

(Strictly for ACT residents with a licence or those overseas where cultivation is legal.)

Experience level: intermediate. The Gelato genetics carry the nutrient sensitivity of their Cookies parentage, tip burn in weeks 1 to 3 is more common with Cookies-derived autos than with ruderalis-heavy ones, and early damage affects the candy-cream terpene development through to harvest. The dense, compact bud structure also needs airflow management in late flower. Growers with one or two auto runs behind them will find Auto Runtz rewarding and consistent. Our cannabis seedling care guide covers a strong start.

Critical auto rules, before germination:

  • Start in the final container: 10 to 15 L indoors, 15 to 20 L outdoors. No transplanting
  • Feed at quarter strength from week one: Gelato-derived genetics show overfeeding stress faster than ruderalis-heavy autos, so start conservative and watch tips closely
  • LST, no topping: gentle LST from week 2 to 3, no topping, the fixed timeline does not allow recovery
  • Plan airflow: the dense buds need circulation from week 6, so set fans and extraction before you start

Height and structure: compact at 60 to 100 cm, bushy and well-branched, with multiple lateral bud sites that respond well to LST. Opening the canopy from week 2 to 3 meaningfully improves both yield and airflow through the dense late-flower structure.

Airflow in late flower: the Gelato and Zkittlez genetics produce dense, resinous buds by week 7 that need active airflow, humidity below 45% from week 6 and oscillating fans covering the inner canopy. This matters more with Cookies-derived genetics than with open sativa or ruderalis-heavy autos.

The cure is decisive here: the candy-cream limonene and linalool profile that defines Runtz develops in the jar. Fresh-dried smells decent, but after 3 to 4 weeks of cure the candy-shop and creamy vanilla character is fully expressed, this is when it tastes like Runtz. Growers who assess at one week post-harvest consistently underestimate the strain. Our amber trichomes guide covers the harvest window and the drying and curing guide covers protecting these volatile terpenes.

🏠 Indoor Growing

  • Seed to harvest: 70 to 77 days fixed, no light flip required
  • Yield: up to 450 g/m² under quality lighting with LST
  • Container: start and finish in 10 to 15 L, no transplanting
  • Light: 18/6 recommended, 20/4 marginally better for yield
  • Height: 60 to 100 cm, compact and manageable in any standard tent
  • Training: LST from week 2 to 3, the branchy structure offers multiple productive bud sites to expose
  • Airflow: active from week 6, humidity below 45% and oscillating fans on the inner canopy for the dense buds
  • Cycles: 5 to 6 complete indoor runs a year

🌿 Outdoor Growing (Australia)

  • Timing: ~70 to 77 days from planting, not season-dependent. Plant September through March for warm-weather runs
  • Yield: 60 to 120 g per plant, larger containers (15 to 20 L) and full sun push toward the upper end
  • Container: 15 to 20 L minimum, started in the final pot, no transplanting
  • Site: full sun preferred, 6-plus hours direct light, with good natural airflow an advantage given the dense buds
  • Multiple runs: two to three runs per season achievable with the 70 to 77 day timeline. Our Australian climate strain guide covers regional fit
  • Best climates: handles warm Australian conditions well, ruderalis adds temperature resilience, but avoid planting into high-humidity coastal autumn where the dense buds raise mould risk

🧪 Auto Runtz Seeds EC and Feeding Guide: Soil and Coco

Auto Runtz carries the Gelato-derived sensitivity of its Cookies Fam parentage, comparable to GSC in overfeeding response early and similarly sensitive to excess nitrogen in late flower where the candy-cream terpene profile develops. Start at quarter strength, watch tips carefully through weeks 1 to 3, and back off nitrogen firmly from week 6. The limonene and linalool character, the candy-shop and creamy vanilla that defines Runtz, is among the terpene profiles most affected by excess nitrogen and most improved by a proper flush and cure.

All EC values assume quality base nutrients. Australian tap water typically runs 0.2 to 0.5 EC, so factor that into your target and measure after mixing.

📊 EC and pH Target Table: Soil vs Coco

Phase / Week Soil EC Coco EC Soil pH Coco pH Notes
Weeks 1–2
Seedling
0.4–0.6 0.5–0.8 6.2–6.5 5.8–6.0 Gelato-derived genetics show overfeeding stress faster than ruderalis-heavy autos. Plain water in week 1, watch tips at every watering.
Weeks 3–4
Early veg / pre-flower
0.8–1.2 1.0–1.4 6.0–6.5 5.8–6.2 Build to half strength. Nitrogen-forward. LST in progress. Pre-flowers around day 21 to 28. Build EC only as the plant shows it can handle it, tips are the first signal to back off.
Weeks 4–5
Pre-flower transition
1.0–1.4 1.2–1.6 6.0–6.5 5.8–6.2 Reduce nitrogen, introduce bloom nutrients. Begin potassium support, it drives both the Zkittlez candy and Gelato creamy terpenes.
Weeks 5–8
Peak flower
1.2–1.6 1.4–1.8 6.0–6.5 5.8–6.2 High P and K, do not exceed these. Back off nitrogen from week 6, the candy-cream limonene and linalool profile suffers noticeably with excess N in Cookies-derived genetics.
Weeks 9–10
Late flower / ripening
1.0–1.4 1.2–1.6 6.0–6.5 5.8–6.2 Taper EC down. Check trichomes from day 63. The candy-shop and creamy peak develops here. Target 15 to 20% amber.
Final 7–10 days
Flush
0.0–0.4 0.0–0.5 6.2 5.8–6.0 Plain pH water until runoff EC drops below 0.5. The candy-cream profile is noticeably cleaner after a proper flush, near-essential with Cookies-derived genetics.

🌱 Soil-Specific Notes

Pre-loaded nutrients: quality potting mix runs 1.0 to 1.5 EC on its own in weeks 1 to 3, so plain water only in week 1. The Gelato-derived sensitivity means the medium is more than adequate early, and adding feed on top is the most common cause of early tip burn with these genetics.

Runoff monitoring: water to 10 to 20% runoff and measure it. Runoff more than 0.4 above feed-in indicates salt buildup, so flush with twice the pot volume of plain pH water. The candy-cream profile suffers from salt accumulation, so monitor through weeks 5 to 8.

Watering frequency: every 2 to 3 days in veg, every 1 to 2 days in peak flower, letting the top 2 to 3 cm dry between waterings. The bushy compact structure pulls water actively from week 5.

🥥 Coco-Specific Notes

Feeding frequency: once daily in veg, twice daily in peak flower. Never let coco dry out completely, consistent hydration through weeks 5 to 8 directly supports the limonene and linalool development.

pH in coco: 5.9 to 6.1 at every feed. The candy and creamy profile is sensitive to pH drift, below 5.8 the sweet-fruit character diminishes before visible deficiency appears.

CalMag in coco: 1 to 2 ml/L from week 1 through flush. Coco binds calcium and magnesium, so check pH first when brown spots appear on mid-canopy leaves before assuming overfeeding.

Nitrogen in late flower: back off firmly from week 6. The limonene candy and linalool creamy profile of Cookies-derived genetics is directly affected by excess nitrogen in late flower, faster and more pronounced in coco than soil.

📋 EC Troubleshooting

What You're Seeing Likely Cause Action
Tip burn weeks 1 to 3 EC too high for Gelato-derived genetics, or pre-loaded soil plus added feed Drop to plain water for one or two waterings, then resume lower. These genetics show it faster than ruderalis-heavy autos, and early damage affects candy terpene development all the way to harvest.
Candy-cream aroma flat in late flower Excess nitrogen suppressing limonene and linalool, pH drift, or insufficient cure Check pH first, back off nitrogen from week 6. If flat at harvest, jar for 3 to 4 weeks, the character develops significantly during cure.
Moisture in inner canopy weeks 7 to 10 Dense Cookies-derived bud structure with inadequate airflow Increase fan coverage to the inner canopy and drop RH below 45%. This is an airflow problem, not a feeding one.
Dark green, clawing leaves mid-flower Nitrogen toxicity, N not backed off from week 6 Reduce EC and the nitrogen proportion. The candy-cream profile needs P and K in flower, not N.
Runoff EC well above feed-in Salt buildup, which directly affects the candy-cream expression Flush with twice the pot volume of plain pH water, aiming for runoff below 1.0 before resuming.

💡 Feeding Key Principles

  • Gelato sensitivity from week one: watch tips at every watering through weeks 1 to 3, tip burn here is permanent on the fixed timeline and costs terpene quality to harvest
  • Back off nitrogen from week 6: the limonene candy and linalool creamy profile is the most strain-specific feeding action, excess N in weeks 7 to 9 mutes the candy-shop character that defines the strain
  • Potassium from week 4: consistent K through peak flower supports both terpene development and bud density
  • Airflow from week 6: the dense buds need active airflow and humidity below 45%, a feeding change has no effect on mould risk, airflow does
  • Flush and cure are the terpene finish: 7 to 10 day flush, then 3 to 4 weeks in sealed jars, the candy-cream character is much better expressed after proper post-harvest treatment

🗓️ Auto Runtz Seeds Week-by-Week Grow Guide

Auto Runtz runs 70 to 77 days. The Zkittlez × Gelato genetics produce a dense, aromatic plant that needs active management in three windows: early LST before the canopy closes, nitrogen back-off from week 6 to protect the candy terpenes, and airflow from week 6 for the dense buds. The cure is the fourth, 3 to 4 weeks minimum.

Phase / Week What's Happening Key Actions Watch Out For
Weeks 1–2
Seedling
Taproot establishing. Compact, bushy structure beginning, with tight internodals from the start. Plain water or quarter strength. 18/6. 60 to 70% RH. Final container from day one. Overfeeding, Gelato genetics show it faster than most autos. Do not exceed quarter strength, tip burn here costs candy terpene quality through the whole grow.
Weeks 3–4
Early veg / pre-flower
Bushy growth, multiple lateral shoots from the compact structure. Pre-flowers around day 21 to 28. Begin LST from week 2 to 3. Build to half strength. EC 0.8 to 1.2 soil / 1.0 to 1.4 coco. 50 to 60% RH. Missing the LST window, the compact Cookies-derived structure closes up quickly. Open the canopy early for light and airflow.
Weeks 5–7
Early-mid flower
Dense bud sites stacking. Candy-sweet aroma building noticeably from week 5 to 6 as the limonene and linalool profile becomes distinct. Resin above average for the format. Transition to bloom. EC 1.2 to 1.6 soil / 1.4 to 1.8 coco. Potassium boost from week 5. Carbon filter from week 5. Drop RH to 45 to 50%. Back off nitrogen from week 6. Excess nitrogen directly mutes the candy-cream character. Back off N from week 6 regardless of leaf colour. Begin active airflow.
Weeks 8–10
Late flower / ripening
Dense, frosty buds at peak with the full candy-shop and creamy vanilla aroma. Trichomes moving cloudy to amber. Heavy resin for an auto. Check trichomes from day 63. Drop RH to 40 to 45%. Begin flush at 10 to 15% amber. Keep inner-canopy airflow up. Harvest at 15 to 20% amber for the balanced effect. Early harvest, the full profile and balanced effect both need the trichome target. Cloudy-only produces a lighter, less characteristic result.
Days 70–77
Flush & harvest
Final ripening, dense resin-coated buds with peak candy-shop aroma, natural leaf yellowing. Plain pH water for 7 to 10 days. Harvest at 15 to 20% amber. Slow dry at 15 to 18 °C, 55 to 60% RH for 10 to 14 days. Rushing the dry. The limonene and linalool candy-cream terpenes are volatile, a fast hot dry loses the character.
Post-harvest
Cure
The full candy-shop and creamy vanilla complexity develops in the jar. Fresh-dried is decent, but after 3 to 4 weeks it is fully expressed, what the reputation is built on. Jar at 60 to 65% RH, burp daily for two weeks. 3 weeks minimum, 4 weeks for the full candy-cream depth. Judging it on fresh-dried material. The gap between week one and week four of cure is more pronounced with Cookies-derived genetics than most autos.

🧠 Jason's Tip: Growing Auto Runtz

Two things determine whether Auto Runtz delivers the flavour it is known for: the nitrogen back-off in late flower and the cure. With Cookies-derived genetics, and Runtz has Gelato in its lineage, which has GSC in its parentage, excess nitrogen in flower mutes the limonene and linalool expression noticeably. Back off nitrogen firmly from week 6 regardless of what the leaves look like. The plant needs phosphorus and potassium to finish bud and terpene development, not more N.

On the cure, I hear growers say Auto Runtz smells decent but is not as loud as expected. Every time I dig into their process, they assessed at one or two weeks post-harvest. The candy-cream profile develops in the jar over 3 to 4 weeks. It is not there at week one, it is fully there at week four. This matters more with Cookies-derived genetics than with most other auto profiles.

The early feeding is the other thing. Gelato genetics show nutrient stress faster than ruderalis-heavy autos. Start at quarter strength, watch the tips at every watering through weeks 1 to 3, and do not increase EC faster than the plant shows it can handle. Tip burn at week two of an auto is permanent, there is no recovery window. The growers who get the candy flavour are the ones who were patient with the feeding from the start.

🎯 Is Auto Runtz Right for Your Grow?

✅ Auto Runtz is the right choice if:

  • You want the Zkittlez × Gelato candy-shop profile, the most distinctively sweet and fruity in the auto catalogue, on a fixed 70 to 77 day timeline
  • The balanced social-euphoria-to-body-ease effect suits your use, uplifting and talkative early, comfortable and relaxed as it settles
  • A fixed timeline and compact 60 to 100 cm height without a light flip suits your setup
  • Multiple outdoor cycles per season matter, two to three runs between September and April in warm states
  • You have one or two auto runs behind you and can manage the Gelato-derived feeding sensitivity from the start

❌ Consider alternatives if:

  • Maximum yield per cycle is the priority, the Runtz Feminised photoperiod produces significantly more with extended veg
  • Maximum potency is the brief, Auto Fat Bastard is the highest-potency auto in the catalogue
  • Heavy pure-indica relaxation is what you are after, Auto Purple Kush or Auto Granddaddy Purple suit a fuller body experience
  • This is your first auto grow, the Gelato-derived feeding sensitivity and late-flower airflow needs make a more ruderalis-robust auto a better introduction

❓ Frequently Asked Questions: Auto Runtz Seeds

What are Auto Runtz seeds?

Auto Runtz seeds are an autoflowering feminised version of the Zkittlez × Gelato cross, two landmark West Coast US genetics. Zkittlez won 1st place at the 2016 Emerald Cup and is the reference point for candy-fruit terpene expression, and Gelato (Thin Mint GSC × Sunset Sherbet) brought creamy dessert sweetness and potency. The ruderalis cross brings the genetics onto a fixed 70 to 77 day seed-to-harvest timeline with no light schedule to manage. For the full story, see our Runtz strain review.

How long do Auto Runtz seeds take from seed to harvest?

Approximately 70 to 77 days (10 to 11 weeks) from germination on a fixed timeline. Check trichomes from day 63. Harvest at 15 to 20% amber for the characteristic balanced euphoric-to-body-ease effect, later harvest (20 to 30% amber) shifts toward more sedation. Both the candy-cream profile and the balanced effect develop in this amber window, so do not harvest at predominantly cloudy trichomes.

Does the auto version taste like the original Runtz?

Yes, with a proper cure, which is the key qualifier with Cookies-derived genetics. The limonene-forward candy-fruit and linalool-driven creamy vanilla carry through the ruderalis conversion. The candy-shop character develops in the jar over 3 to 4 weeks, so growers who assess at one week post-harvest find it decent but not exceptional, while at four weeks the profile is fully expressed. Flush for 7 to 10 days, dry slowly at 15 to 18 °C, and cure for a minimum of 3 to 4 weeks.

What yields can I expect from Auto Runtz seeds?

Up to 450 g/m² indoors under quality lighting with LST from week 2 to 3, with 350 to 400 g/m² the realistic expectation for competent growers. The compact structure means LST makes a meaningful yield difference and should be treated as essential. Outdoor plants produce 60 to 120 g each depending on container size and sun.

How does the effect compare to indica-dominant autos?

More balanced than a pure indica auto. The 40% sativa Gelato and Zkittlez genetics produce an uplifting, social, euphoric onset in the first hour that pure indica-dominant autos like Auto Purple Kush or Auto Granddaddy Purple do not deliver. The indica body effect builds progressively over 60 to 120 minutes and the final phase is comfortable and relaxing, so the overall experience is balanced between social engagement and physical ease rather than straightforwardly heavy.

Is growing Auto Runtz seeds straightforward?

Intermediate. The Gelato-derived genetics carry real nutrient sensitivity that shows up faster than ruderalis-heavy autos, and the dense buds need active airflow management from week 6. Growers with one or two auto runs behind them who start conservative on feeding and watch tips in weeks 1 to 3 will get consistent, rewarding results. Flush properly, cure for 3 to 4 weeks, and it delivers what the Zkittlez × Gelato genetics are known for.

Do you ship Auto Runtz seeds across Australia?

Yes, with fast domestic shipping and discreet packaging, and most orders arrive within a few business days. All seeds are batch-tested with the paper towel method at ~22 °C and stored cold and dry to preserve viability.

Hi all got some auto runtz seedsl last year from SS. I put them in early October which I thought would be fine because that’s usually the time frame to put seeds in October or November. By the way they all germinated My bad way to early for auto seeds because we had some really cold nights. Anyway my girls turned out to be a first class smoke. Very tasty and very sticky. However I can’t stress enough about drying your plants properly hanging up side down for 8 days cool dry dark environment depending on size of buds and curing your buds properly makes a huge difference. At least a minimum of 5 weeks curing. Anything more is better still. Shipping and delivery was excellent and so is the support from Jess and jason

They are still looking awesome probably in a month I’ll reap my rewards. Definitely will do autos again but have learned from my mistake. Advice from sacred seeds was invaluable thanks To Jess and Jason. Looking forward to getting more products especially keen to try the fast version. Thanks.

Germinated the Runtz using the paper towel method, has since transplanted to an outside greenhouse, weather gave them a hard time with high heat & humidity, but with some TLC I have rescued then and they powering along , excellent genetics, recommend them to anyone, expecting to harvest in early 2026
